In one of the biggest upsets in the history of the sport, MMA King Fedor "The Last Emperor" Emelianenko, lost for the first time to Brazilian Fabricio Werdum in the first round via Submission.
Fedor came into the fight with insane record of 31 wins and only 1 no contest. He stepped into the octagon for the first time since November, where he leveled opponent Bret Rogers in a TKO win.
Brazilian Fabricio "Vai Cavalo" Werdum last fight was against Antonio Silva, where he won by a Unanimous Decision at Strikeforce / M-1 Global - Fedor vs. Rogers event back in November. Strikeforce / M-1 Global - Fedor vs. Werdum event held at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
The fight started with both fighters having a cautious approach, as Fedor Emelianenko was looking for an opening to land his first strikes on Fabricio Werdum, and he did it. Fedor Landed a powerful right hand on Fabricio Werdum, knocking down the Brazilian to the canvas. Werdum's ground game did not disappoint, as he immediately fired an armbar attempt, which was followed by a vicious textbook triangle choke. With his arm and head trapped by Werdum, Fedor Emelianenko had no choice but to tap out for the first time in his illustrious career. The referee Big John McCarthy stopped this contest at 1:09 minutes of Round 1.
Many people will be looking for explanations after this fight, in light of Fedor's recent retirement talk and involvement in politics. "The Last Emperor" was unable to execute his gameplan, possibly underestimating his opponent's ground skills. Fedor should have known that the main aspect of Fabricio Werdum's gameplan was taking the fight to the ground, and that's the exact place where he followed him after getting the knock down.
It is still unclear if Fabricio Werdum dethroned "The Last Emperor", as Fedor's real test will be in his next fight at Strikeforce. You are only as good as your last fight, and Emelianenko will something prove when he steps back into the Strikeforce cage against Fabricio Werdum (or Alistair Overeem). As for The Demolition Man, the Dutchman has every right to feel disappointed after Fabricio Werdum made it clear that he is not interested in fighting the Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion, asking for a rematch against Fedor Emelianenko instead.
Do I think that Fedor was overconfident in this fight? Absolutely. Fedor Emelianenko is now facing his moment of turth: whether he wants to continue fighting and bounce back from his loss, or to retire from the sport and go back to politics. Only time will tell what's next for The Last Emperor. As for Werdum, Vai Cavalo will enjoy his finest hour, and return to the top of the Mixed Martial Arts Heavyweight elite.

Tough loss
Werdum seems like a nice guy with great ground skills. Congrats to him on the win. Fedor is my favorite fighter and I hope there is a rematch very soon.
I feel Fedor could have won tonight if he wouldn't have followed Werdum to the ground, but that's easy to say while I sit on my couch and eat popcorn.
The thing I like most about Fedor is that he is the first to admit he's beatable and he's respectful to his oppenents. I haven't seen the post fight interview but I would bet my house that Fedor is only respectful in defeat.
Congrats again to Werdum fans and I hope to see Fedor fight again soon.

Everybody loses, Muhammad Ali lost his last 3 fights and is still considered the greatest of all time. Im happy he lost to somebody respectable as a person and a fighter such as Werdum, If Fedor was to lose you would want him to lose to somebody respectful.

If Fedor would've played smart instead of going for the kill it'd probably been another story, but that was a TOP 3 ALL-TIME submission, dude. I mean... wow! And everything Werdum said and did in victory was classy - it fit perfectly with Cung's kick and Shamrock's retirement speech.
Don't let the haters drag you down to their level and destroy what was a brilliant display of pure MARTIAL ARTS at it's finest...

He looked fine, fast hands and going for the kill
I thought he looked fine. I feel it may have been the cage that got him caught. If you watch the fight again his back bouces on the cage and that's when Werdum catches his arm just right. A boxing style ring has a different feel, which is where most of his mma fights took place. I know Fedor practices in a cage but i'm not sure how often. Watch the fight again and let me know if you agree.

Fedor is my favorite MMA fighter because of his actions in and out of the ring. He has a love for his country, fans and he has a passion for fighting. If fans of Fedor stop liking him after this defeat then they were not real fans to begin with.
Fedor was the first person to say that one day he would loose. He is always the first to say he is not the best, although I feel he is.
Fedor is a great fighter but also a great person. One MMA match does not change that.
Congrats Werdum.

Refused to resign? Take your retard-pills Rane, last dose is wearing off. Werdum got smashed and was run out of the UFC to Strikeforce. He left after being destroyed. He refused to sign a contract, not the other way around. He got completely dominated by JDS, then he beat Fedor.
Beating up UFC rejects and UFC wash-outs, doesn't mean anything. Now he's losing to UFC rejects.

None of those guys have Werdum's BJJ. He has shown dominance over high level wrestlers and none of those guys can stand with him except maybe Carwin and JDS. As I have said in the past, there are guys out there who can beat Fedor on their best day but Fedor can still beat them on his best. Even so, it really doesn't matter. It is like saying that Matt Hughes beating Royce Gracie makes Hughes the more accomplished fighter. No one will ever do what Fedor has done and there is still no one, including Werdum, who Fedor can't beat. If they rematch, Fedor wins. This is like Edgar beating Penn.

Penn v Edgar was different. Fedor tapped, BJ got out pointed without really taking any punches it was a weird fight. I personally think that if Fedor fought Brock or Carwin he'd do well to win 1 of those fights i could see brock over powering fedor and carwin putting him to sleep.

Wow nice job Werdum. All you people make me sick. A man lost, you guys are jumping on him. Fedor has a one more fight in america, so lets see a rematch, i'm sure strikeforce will do that. Fedor got caught, got over zealous, it happens to all the best, Anderson Silva anybody? Chances are he needed a loss to motivate him to either retire or continue fighting, he looked a bit extra soft. Whatever he decides Werdum stated that Fedor is the best and was the best.

Idiotic comparison. Mir is a "has-been", because the rest of the competition has gotten better. Mir has improved, and has been in the best shape of his life. He loses because the other fighters are better. Also, it was the Ref that took that fight, not Mir. Unless you claim the stoppage was legit, in which case you're a liar.
Who did Fedor fight in his first fight? Since you like to make silly nonsense comparisons? Who were his first 3 opponents? Nobody can name them. They can all name Lesnar's though.

He has one more fight. Hopefully it will be the rematch Werdum asked for. The only way you will see him in the UFC is if he avenges that loss but at this point Dana will use this as an out to protect his top HWs from a potential loss to a guy who was beaten by Werdum, who he sees as washed up.

Riiiiiight he's bent over backward to sign Fedor because he wants to protect the real top HW's from the guy who lost to someone who couldn't hack it in the UFC.
The only way we'll see Fedor in the UFC is if the top-10 catch Lesnar's ass fungus and have to retire.

Absolutely amazing. A ten year run has just come to an end. It will be interesting to see if the talk of retiring comes to anything or if this reinvigorates Fedor. On a side note, this fight makes Overeem irrelevant. Werdum V Overeem is no where near as exciting now as Werdum V Fedor II. I am picking Fedor to win the rematch. This loss boils down to a mistake. Fedor will not make the same mistake twice.

One loss and people are already saying Fedors done? Please tell me people arn't this ignorant. Fedor made a mistake, and Werdum took advantage of it. He knows how to defend against this kind of submisson, it's very common in Sambo and I'm sure he's upset he failed to do so. No ones perfect, we all make mistakes. He's still the best P4P in my book.

He tried a couple of times by the looks of it, but he defiantly overcommitment to GnP without trying to establish a god position. Werdum did a beautiful job. I'm not sure of this was a mistake due to mental error or the fact that he is slowing down, when he fought Nog he threw his submissions no problem, but he obviously didn't this time.

Its funny how Fedorites are saying stuff like "He will be back" and "Everybody loses" For one, he will not be back... He will fulfill he contractual obligations and disappear into obscurity.. So maybe one more fight and it will probably just be Werdum again. He even sounded like he was done. He said "I have one more fight in America."
As far as the "everybody loses" crap, that sure as hell is not what u have been talking all along!? Plus, saying his win streak is impressive is lame... Dude's record reads like a whose who list of nobodies. He finally fights a guy who is ARGUABLY top ten, not arguably now, but going in and loses in 1 minute... Well 1 minute and 9 seconds, sorry...
He was great in Pride. That died with Pride.
And yes I picked Werdum by sub in 2nd rnd, so dont try to say I switched up.

No, I am not kicking him... He is far from a bum and is one of the greatest to have ever did this fight thing. Just that he hasn't been very competitive over the last few years. He has fought sub-par opponents and made less and less appearances in the octagon. My comments are in regards to those who have battered any person around them who tried to make the rational argument that Fedor may no longer be the p4p best... Its amazing how modest they have become now.

Any given night it can happen. Look I have coached state champions and we would have 3 loses in the regular season and get in the playoffs and upset some dominant teams. I have been undefeated and get upset. It happens. Fedor has even said it can happen and it happened. Now all you Fedor haters have your moment tonight which is great. Eventually you will have to pick he would lose. Not trying to knock your predictions they obviously were good one's. I love Fedor he is still a great fighter, Werdum even said that and said he would fight Fedor again because he is the "BEST". Congrats on all your picks.
Oh, on another note did everyone see how Fedor handles himself win or lose? it is the same. Not like Lesnar(WWE joke), or Mir. Fedor is like Carwin very humble and gracious win or lose. Yes losing does happen. One man never lost a fight and it was Rocky Marciano, but nobody claims him the greatest, but all the ALI fans claim Ali the greatest after losing 4 fights. WOW!!!!!

Fedor's beaten half the UFC champs that ever was and he's beaten all the PRIDE champs. The "era" you're speaking of is Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture - every other active champ he's beaten. Between those two they've had 4 title fights.
And please don't mention Pride when you think Nog and Cro Cop are the only fighters worth mentioning out of that era - it's obvious you wasn't there to testify.

As I said in my comment, I mentioned it so ppl wouldn't say I switched up. Thats an all around ignorant statement. I don't think I have ever picked Fedor to lose a fight before this one (Well maybe against Nog). Fedor Submitted, Wow Shocking,
Well I just witnissed the last Emperor Dethroned by a huge Underdog in Fabricio Werdum, now that fight taught me something, never be too quick to ground and pound a world class BJJ blackbelt and champion, But i noticed Fedor' heart and Mindset wasn't into the fight he looked as if he had a bad day right before fight night as if he were dumped by a lover, I'm still a fedor fan and i gotta hand it to werdum because he Trained lots and lots of BJJ for this fight and it payed off because Mentally he wanted this fight Alot, Brock vs Carwin will simply unify the best Heavyweight fighter right now, i've gotta get back in the Gym and work on my submission defence, now this like i said this had an MMa Educational aspect, never be too quick to Ground and pound a BJJ blackbelt because once he grabs ahold of an arm or leg, if he has it tight you'll be submitted,

we'll most people don't think he sucks...what most fans don't understand is why is he fighting lesser competition when there are guys excluding UFC HWs that post a better challenge for him..like Overeem...but he fought Werdum..i guess he thought werdum will be an easy fight...and he paid for it...Rocky Marciano btw was a straight up brawler with no footwork....he won fighting guys that were working as miners, construction workers, railroad builders...

Fedor fans have been going by the record ALL THIS TIME to say he's the greatest. Now he loses and you compare him to ali? Shut the hell up. If anybody is like ali it'd be silva, the guy who everyone was crying about because he wouldnt do what fedor did tonight and jump in a BJJ blackbelts guard.

Ali fought the best HW's in the world. Whereas Fedor's record is filled with a lot of names who might be worthy sparring partners at best.
And, Ali only lost to the top tier fighters, and he actually was old. Unlike Fedor who only looks old compared to the top competition.

I doubt this is going to tarnish his legacy, especially because he himself doesn't care all that much. In ten years people will be arguing about brock randy, bj, anderson, gsp etc. Then somebody is going to say "you guys remember Fedor?" and everybody will have a moment of silence, because they remember.

My last comment on the fight and I am out:
Losing happens and athlete that disagree's never wore a jock strap. Every great has lost. Before I leave being 12-0 doesn't mean you are great too many fights left. If you win 30+ fights and lose 1 or 2 you are great.

The fact is that nobody in combat sports (boxing, MMA. etc.) has ever fought the level of competition that Lesnar is fighting from the beginning of their career. Fedor had something like 15 MMA fights, years of training, dozens of other fights in other sports, before he fought a significant opponent.
I defy anyone to show me any other fighter with a comparable level of competition in their first fights. Not Anderson, not Roy Jones, not Mike Tyson, not Ali, not Georges, not BJ, not Rua, not Machida, not Randy Couture or Nog or Cro Cop or anybody. Nobody even comes close.
Lesnar deserves respect for that fact.

I just got back from this fight (the first MMA event I've been to).
Wow. It almost feels like a dream...the fight was just so quick!
I knew Werdum had the choke in deep as soon as he threw up that triangle, but it was just so surreal.
I've been a hardcore MMA & Fedor fan for about six years now and it was just so crazy seeing Fedor lose live in person. Much props to Werdum though, he did exactly what he trained to do and said he was ooing to do.
Damn!

Summing up the thread - a long and depressing read:
What's really SAD about this fight imho is the sour taste the UFC/Cock Chestnar fanboys put on a otherwise brilliant finish from Werdum and a excellent, excellent card for Strikeforce.
They want to make it about Fedor losing, but it's really about them not being able to appreciate Werdum winning...

Overeem would be fun to watch against Dos Santos. That'd be an awesome fight. And you're right. Fedor won't be offered anything remotely close to what the UFC offered him before.
It was dumb of him, when he had the leverage, because of all the myth and legend surrounding his name, he could have locked in a 10 fight deal for like $3m a pop and been completely secure. Let's just hope that the damage having been done to M-1 now, maybe Fedor will figure he has nothing to lose and everything to gain by making the move to major league fighting.
I like Fedor, but he has been stupid and selfish, his management too. People will still watch him, even if he's losing in the UFC, he should do it.

It is ok to lose.....
I admire Fedor, even in defeat, as a human being and as a fighter. This sport is a brutal one and even the greats fall. Fedor summed it up best in his post fight response about how he will deal with the loss. "You can't get back up without falling." The way Werdum won was a classic armbar by a specialist in that realm. Congrats to Werdum, and even in victory he admits that Fedor is the best. Fedor, as I have said before has nothing left to prove. Name a great, any great , in any sport or realm of life and they have all seen defeat. Today's loss could have happened to anyone and to be honest was not a devastating loss that diminishes any credibility on Fedor. The man simply got caught in a brilliant submission by one of the best on the ground. Good job Werdum. Fedor needed this in my opinion. He needed someone to let him get hungry again. He's been full for too long. Can't wait for his next fight.

Knockout well said
Any given night it can happen.
Carwin has not lost and hopefully July 3rd it won't happen.
I look at a fighter like Fedor and see a good side to him. It doesn't come off arrogant and ****y like some fighters with way, way more loses then him.
You are great when people love it when you lose. A great coach told me that "they never boo a loser. They boo a winner who lost."
UFC fans jump on popularity votes they all find out who everyyone else likes or is winning or acts like a fool in the cage. It reminds me when the Duke was great in the 90's, then all of the sudden they don't show any arrogance and when they lose everyone says "see I told you they suck" after they win about 4-5 NCAA titles.

Just a reminder to all Fedor fans:
First I still think he is the best just like Werdum said. The UFC fans love it since he lost. Ask them if they still love their favorite fighter if he loses? My guess is they jump on another band wagon. This ought to get some interesting comments.

I said before in another forum Fedor looked softer than usual (physically) I guess mentally he was a bit softer as well, very silly mistake by Fedor cost him this fight.
However it's that kind of reckless abandon that makes everyone love Fedor, he's a killer, he thinks you are hurt and he tries to shut you off ... or take your arm home. Werdeum bated him, it worked.

Why are you blubbering and crying about a UFC promoter? Did he somehow make your imaginary husband lose his fight?
You're angry because Dana White is right about Fedor not being the P4P #1, or the #1 HW.
It must be rough to have these kinds of long built of illusions shattered so abruptly.

I've been reading through the threads this morning and I must say. I myself am a UFC Fan, I actually like Dana White and I think Brock actually has some talent besides being 265+ pounds.
That being said you really need to tone it down and get off Dana/Brocks and the UFC's nuts.
Is Dana happy? , probably. Is Fedor still the best heavy weight in the world, Yes. Everyone loses, but he has still amassed the greatest record in the sport. Now if he goes and fights silva/overeem and gets Ko'd, then you can come back and run your mouth until then shut up.

Win / lose. People still love / hate the guy. The arguements still the same and the questions still asked.
Regardless of this result he is so good his record is still unmatched. I'm surprised by how he rushed it so much, kinda reminded me of arlovski rushing in and losing.
The most interesting thing is how the rankings pan out. If Brock wins and goes #1 it makes a total mockery of the rankings as he hasn't fought in over a year. But we'll have to wait and see.
To the haters who think this justifies their continual derision of Fedor, grow up and recognise he is a fighter like any other who can lose but one whose record is second to none and he always tries to finish rather than laying and praying or dancing around and regardless of your immature noobish opinions will always go down in history as one of mma's finest.

It has just occured to me all this discussion is derived from the fact fedor didn't sign for ufc. GSP lost and there weren't loads of haters saying told you so. All fighters can lose, and your point is? If you seriously think this proves bs opinion that fedor is crap or undeserving of his rank it only proves how extremely arrogant you are and how ignorant and uneducated and gullible to Dana's anti fedor line cos he failed to contract the greatest fighter of his generation to ever set foot in a ring. His achievements still outwiegh any other fighter in UFC, and in years to come long after we are dead will be known as one of the godfathers of mma along with gracie, and will stil command one of the best ever records and win streaks.

Why can't you retards stop mentioning his record? what if brock left the ufc and decided to fight johnny nobodies to go 60-1? Damn kids should be banned until they can actually make argments that don't sound like "omg fedor never loses!" or "omg nobuddy can beet hiz record!" That's because the other good heavyweights fight each other.
Again, nobody hates on Fedors abilities, they hate on the army of imbeciles winning attracts.

I predicted it would be when he finally joined the UFC at the age of 100yrs old. If the man said he would get beat one day and all you guys read every blog story. You should know he has said this many times. Oh wait, it wasn't on a UFC forum.

Who wouldn't want to see a rematch? I would I think Fedor will not go in for the kill that fast and keep the fight longer. He is smarter then me though so who knows what he will do. I think someone said it best. They wanted to see more kicks from Fedor. The comment came way before the Werdum fight like in May. Anyway, why wouldn't they not want a rematch quickly?

I think a rematch is the most probably case scenario at this moment. Unless Strikeforce can sign Fedor for one more fight, that way he'll have to fight two more times. Once against Big Foot, then he'll face Werdum vs Overeem winner, hopefully Werdum will win against Overeem and we'll have one of the most anticipated rematches since Shogun/Machida. But that can only happen if SF signs another fight contract which i doubt they will. It's plausable Fedor vs Werdum 2, Fedors contract ends, hopefully he wins (if not, he should retire), and now is the chance for UFC to snag Fedor for a 3 fight deal minus co-promotion, they have a bit more leverage now to do so. Dana is not going to give this up, no matter what he says, there is a potential for so much money he's head will pop.

Fedor vs Werdum 2...?
Isnt this a boring re-match? What do you think it will happen...? Silly rematch if you ask me, Fedor will keep the game stand up and "run" away frim ground game. It wasnt a good match up in the first place and it certainlly wont be in a possible rematch. People just want to see that because, weirdlly, they like Fedor so much they cant bare the thought of him loosing... It will be a farse like the Cung Lee re-match, everyone knew he was better, it was arranged only for audiences and the pride of the fighter, nothing else.
Oh, and before you guys talk about other sudden rematches please remember that Shogun and BJ lost because of dubious decisions, they weren't stopped in any way. Fedor is a great fighter but hardly the best of all times. Save that "fanatic" love you have for him and reserve it for your family and friends...

Cung le rematch actually made sense, because it was a KO resulting from untypical behavior by the champ. Fedor rematch makes less sense because:
A) The matchup made no sense in the first place. Werdum nearly loses to like the 17th ranked guy...then gets a shot at the first? Huh? WTF does this prove?!
B) The rematch...still really won't prove anything for Fedor if he wins. Werdum didn't win because he was better, he just seized an opportunity that Fedor pretty much ALWAYS gives his opponents, it's just that noone capitalized up until now
C) Against a man who finally capitalized on that "rush-down even when my opponent has an excellent guard" style, Fedors only other strategy would be to fight like anderson silva and force his opponent to take him down manually or die, which is exactly what his fans(atleast the many less than intelligent ones) said they didn't want.
Personally, i think that fact alone would make it entertaining

I agree with you on the Fedor rematch, it didnt made sense in the first place. Infact, it only proves what im keep saying from M-1 management, they dont know **** and they dont have Fedors best interest in mind - I mean, putting him on a fight he only had things to loose and nothing to gain...?
As for the Cung Lee rematch I personally dont agree. Dont get me wrong, I really like Cung Lee style, its pitty he doesnt invest more in MMA and forget about a mediocre cinema career. But he isnt the champion so why the rematch? Imagine if all the fighters got rematches whenever they lost... Anyway, in the first fight you could clearly see Cung was better, he just made a mistake, didnt followed the game plan and got caught. Again, it wasnt a decision, was a clear stoppage by tko.. The rematch only proved what everyone knew and if it isnt a championship bout, rematches dont make much sense IMO.
