Anderson Silva Wants to Move Permanently to Light Heavyweight

Yahoo Sports , PHILADELPHIA – Hours after the most electrifying domination in a career filled with them, deep in a back hallway of the Wachovia Center, Anderson Silva was waiting for Dana White. Silva is the UFC’s middleweight (185-pound) champion but Saturday he boldly moved up 20 pounds and in a jaw-dropping exhibition, brutalized Forrest Griffin, who just nine months ago was the light heavyweight (205) title holder.

That Silva could move up a weight class and not just win, but destroy with power, was a game-changing and perhaps UFC-altering moment. That’s what Silva and his manager, Ed Soares, wanted to discuss with White.

With his arm wrapped around White’s shoulder, Soares leaned in and delivered a proposition. “Spider” Silva would move permanently to light heavyweight, even if it meant the unorthodox move of giving up his middleweight belt.

“I can do that,” White smiled, a bit stunned at the offer. “I like that. We can do that.”

“I’d let him,” White said later, sitting in his quiet dressing room. “We’d put [the middleweight title] up for grabs.”

With nothing left to prove at middleweight, Anderson Silva now wants to lay waste to a whole new division of the UFC.

    hard one to call huh?
you know the reason that anderson silva has "the best accuracy" in UFC? its because he spends all day training with machida... its obvious... train with a guy that you can't hit so that when you are fighting a guy who can be hit, you destroy him. makes sense, a whole lot of sense actually. machida doesnt train with silva, silva trains with machida. now that said, do i think silva would give the best fight against machida? definitely so far, but he would get TKO or KOed.

im sick of people like you underrating fighters. Wanderlei's MT clinch is way stronger than Anderson Silva's, but he's a smart fighter too, he's not gonna go to the clinch. He'd stand with silva and his stand up striking is better than Silva's.

"Silva vs. Silva.... I'm putting my money on Silva"

machida? well we wont have to worry about silva vs machida, because its not going to happen.. evans? you think if machida beat evans silva couldnt? because machida kinda sorta trains with silva.. rampage is someone who definately stands a chance, as long as he would train hard and fight smart.

Granted for Silva's brilliance performance against Griffin, i think GSP can beat him, eventhough we know that Silva is a hard hitting puncher, but his conditioning is not yet put into a test. Athleticism and conditioning are factors that GSP can use in order to beat Silva, not to mention Fighting IQ.

In terms of reach advantage, both of them are in equal footing, having 76" each.

to the guy who was talking to me... that wasn't a list of people who would win, it was a list of people who would be in the fight, you want my list of ppl who will win against AS? ill give it to you.

Machida (if you disagree you're an idiot), Rashad Evans (too good standing up, too good to get to the ground), Chuck Liddell (glass chin? yes, but got the reach and power to beat even an in shape silva. chuck is underrated bcuz he got KOed by Rua who is a dominate muay thai fighter and evans who is a dominate boxer/wrestler. the guy is still good, and i think he's good enuff to win against silva. ) i know you think im crazy for thinkin that chuck liddell could beat silva but we all know that crazier things have happened in MMA, for instance... Tito Ortiz wanting to fight Fedor Emelianenko..., if chuck hasnt retired yet i wouldnt count him out. maybe anderson silva is just the fight he needs to get his career back on track.

btw, im not a Chuck Liddell fan, i just think he is good

    don't be Stupid, you idiots
for all you MORONS on here who don't seem to get it - Anderson Silva
has NO ONE that could even make him sweat, that is, if he were even TRYING. the skills he possesses are SO far beyond anyone on the planet that - even my boy Machida - it makes me worry about him now, too. but that would truly be the epic fight....until the David & Goliath fight with Lesnar who would be imbarrased and KO'd. Silva made Forrest look small in the ring, so what if he put on another 20#'s?

Oops! I forgot about the light heavyweight champion of the world!
Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida... what is there bad to say about him? The guy is a class act who never talks trash and just leaves it all in the octagon. If Rashad Evans couldn't get but a kick and 2 punches on him, then what do you expect Anderson Silva to do? His best bet would be to utilize that insane BJJ but the problem is keeping Lyoto on the ground long enuff to use it.

ok, so apparently people didnt like my first post bcuz i named a few of the light heavy weights that Anderson Silva should be scared of. So, let me explain each of them.
Rampage has so much power striking that he could KO Anderson Silva with one good punch.
Evans is awesome at stand up, way better than most give him credit for, and you cant take him to the ground bcuz his wrestling is better than Liddell's.
Alexander has that same style that Evans does, just not as coordinated, he would probabely lose to Silva, but he would be in the fight for sure.
Shogun... need I say more...? this fight would be Muay Thai on Muay Thai crime. Both of the fighter are BJJ and MT... It's a battle of who trains harder.
Wanderlei... Wanderlei is way under credited for his MT clinch. Wanderlei doesn't have to rely on the clinch though. His stand up game involves plenty of KO punches. This fight would be a "who has better balance" fight and wanderlei has a lower center of gravity.

    WHO CARES?

Anderson Silva is best p4p! He continuously fights the best of the very best in Leites, Cote, and now in undefeated American Idol reality show winner Forrest Griffin!

    Fedor is a joke!

Besides, Anderson is a great boxer too! He beat legend Osmar Luiz Teixeira!

In contrast Fedor is not good in any sport! He is a loser in Sambo! He never won a fight!

machida is the only one who would give anderson a good fight rampage is a slammer/boxer and i doubt that he wants to clinch with anderson. Rampage always did bad against muy tai. Both rua and the axe murderer beat rampage with knees rua broke his ribs and the axe murderer just destroyed him with the tai clinch.

The problem for GSP is that I'm pretty sure he used to fight at 155 in TKO and it's probably waaayyyy to hard for him to go up another weight class and be competitive against possible one of the best pound for pound fighters of all time. Now that Silvas going up to LHW that dream is done anyway boys and girls

Guys have to look past the axe murderer and chuck, those guys have had it..

Anyone else still wish to see GSP vs Silva at 185? I think Silva is the better fighter, but Silva's only weakness of lacking takedown defense could give GSP a great shot.

Also, if Silva moves to 205lbs, don't we all want to see Silva vs Machida.... the 2 fighters who never even get hit on their feet. Silva almost jumped out his seat at the UFC101 presser to say he would never ever fight his friend Machida

Bad news for the superfights all-around.

Yes he was beaten in Pride and any man is beatable, but now he is even better than back then and on top of his game, can't dispute that.

The dude walks around close to if not or more than 220 lbs.
Fighting at 185, when fight day comes he's probably closer to 200 than 185, so 205 is not a big difference and he would probably be even more comfortable, he just made made Forrest Griffin look absolutely silly, ex LHW Champ!!

will the dude lose, eventually, everyone does. but I guarantee there isn't to many LWH's jumping for joy right now at the thought of him moving up to 205. LOL

There are so many guys at 205 who couldn't touch The Spider. The Axe Murderer? Please. He'd get knocked the f*ck out 1st round, guaranteed. Liddell? No way, 1st round knockout. Tito? No f*cking way in hell. Rampage, interesting, but no way in hell. Here's three good matchups for ya.

    1. Jon Jones. Good length, good power, good takedowns. Might be a little early for him tho.
    2. Rashad Evans. Good opportunity, even though he'd be a heavy underdog.
    3. My favorite pick. Ryan Bader. TUF winner, undefeated, great power, great wrestling. Great fight!!
