Ed Soares matchmaking again: Chael Sonnen should fight Demian Maia first

Brazilian manager Ed Soares reacted to Chael Sonnen's comments regarding Anderson Silva and his credibility, stating that "no one knows who Sonnen is" and that he should prove his worth against Demian Maia first. Soares manages most of the Brazilian fighters in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which makes him a very "heavy" figure when it comes to matchmaking:

"We've spoken with Chael on many occasions and have the utmost respect for him. He's never really come across in this manner, and it's obvious he's just drumming up hype in hopes to get a bout with Anderson. We are fine if this is what the UFC wants, but if you look at this logistically, Sonnen should fight Demian Maia first. Demian beat up easily, by submission, so why not make them fight first, to determine who gets a shot at the title? It's funny, but really, who actually listens to what Chael Sonnen has to say?

The only time people listen is when he talks about Anderson. Who is he, really? If you walk down the street and you mention his name, does anyone really know who this guy is? Likely not, but if you mention Anderson Silva, people know the name. Chael's also said a few things about Anderson's choice of clothes and that he wears earrings, didn't he? Sounds to us like he may have a crush on Anderson."

Last time Ed Soares intervened in matchmaking decisions is when Dan Henderson brutally knocked out Michael Bisping. Soares suggested that Henderson should face Nate Marquardt first, which led to a dispute between Hendo and the UFC management. Only time will tell how Dana White will react to Soares' statements and what will be Anderson Silva's position in the promotion after the UFC Middleweight Title fight against Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort.

    remmeber dan henderson vs anderson silva fight? dan henderson is an olympic wrestler, anderson controled him easly, dan did no damage to him, and then got choked out easy.

    Maia submissioned chael easy, it well be no different with anderson who holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu which he earned in 2006 from rodrigo nogueira. lol fun

    He is doing a good job as an agent. No doubt about that. But he is not a matchmaker, not even close - that is not his role. Sonnen defeated Okami, Dan Miller and Nate Marquardt in his last fights - all top 10 UFC Middleweights.

    What bother me is that it sounds now like anderson is trying to avoid challenging opponents. He had a minor infection on his elbow and he's been OUT FOR MONTHS and everyone can easily associate that with the upcoming bouts against Vitor.
    Now he rather fights Maia than Sonnen, but it is obvious than the more challenging of the 2 for the champion is the wrestler, not the BJJ guy....

    Silva is bobbing, weaving and ducking every possible opponent that could win. With Hendo he beat him, so no big deal, why would you want to refight guys you already beat.

    But with Belfort and Sonnen he has no excuse, except he hasn't seen enough tape of them. All making them fight someone else does is give Silva more of an idea where they have recent weaknesses, and possibly they would be injured.

    Soares doesn't want his top man getting beat, and Sonnen beat Fiho. Soares doesn't want Ando to turn into easy beat fodder like Wandy. ANd i think Chael trash talk would be a weakness for A Sivla, maybe he is only good without any emotion making decisions for him. If he passionately hates someone maybe he is less likely to fight smarter. There is a reason trash talk happens, not just marketing alone.

    I would have completely agreed with Soares normally but the main reason i don't is because it was widely stated BEFORE this fight took place that it was a title eliminator and that the winner would get the next shot, which i'm sure, people wouldn't have a problem with had Marquardt won. i like Nate and completely expected him to dominate that fight and win convincingly, i knew Sonnen was a grinder though, most of his wins by decision says it all. To be honest, i don't like Chael at all, he runs his mouth about fighters that he has no right to and generally just talks shit but you have to be fair. He knew he was fighting for a title shot and even though he HAS NOT got a prayer against Silva, it would be wrong to take that away now. Give him what he deserves i say, (in more ways than one) feed him to Silva, give him his shot, let Silva put him in his place. Sick Nate lost, would liked to have seen him get another crack at Anderson, he'd definately do better than Sonnen will............

I hate Sonnen and I give him very little chance against Silva but he has three very impressive wins against three top MW's in a row. He definitely deserves a title shot.

    It's pretty obvious that Ed is trying to prevent Silva from having to fight people he might lose to. He saw what Hendo did to Bisping and went, shit want no part of that. Then Nate knocks out Maia (who they wanted to fight) and Ed goes, "want no part in fighting Nate" so he has to fight Sonnen and now Sonnen dominates Nate and Ed goes "We don't want to fight Sonnen" becuase he wants to give Maia another shot at title, someone Silva could beat with 1 hand tied behind his back.

    I am surprised really that he took the Vitor fight but probably Dana finally put his foot down and said "Maia lost to Nate, he can't get the title shot you have to fight someone, you turned down Hendo and Nate only Vitor left to fight, suck it up.

    Who gives an f what Ed Soares thinks. Your an agent buddy not f'n joe silva he makes the fights. He makes me sick he doesn't want Anderson to fight anyone. He 1st said henderson should have to fight Nate before Dan gets a title shot. Then when the whole Belfort Nate and Henderson debate started on who deserves the shot he said Belfort shouldn't get the shot because he almost didn't make the 195 weight for the catchweight fight with Franklin. Did Ed forget that Belfort has made the 185 weight 2 times before that fight? Now Sonnen is named the number 1 contender and he's saying how he should fight Maia again? He's Anderson f'n Silva he is said to be the pound for pound best and I also belive he is! So why does it matter who he fights Ed?!     Ed Soares is making the right choice for his fighter by suggesting that Chael fight Demian because Silva is one of the most devastating and dominant fighters of his time and why should he risk anything against anyone other than a legitimate contender. I know Chael has some great skills but he is not seen as exciting and that means he needs more impressive win streaks which he does not have. I wouldn't send out my friend to put his dyna$ty on the line to fight a guy without overall fan credability.
