Frank Mir to Add More Strength to Go with Technique

Former heavyweight champion Frank Mir tells CageWriter.com that his superior technique was just no match for the strength and power of Brock Lesnar in their most recent encounter at UFC 100 back in July. Mir — who defeated Lesnar via first round submission in early 2008 — did not make it out of the second round in the rematch, getting pinned under the 280+-pound monster and overdosing on a huge helping of ham hocks. He was visibly in the best shape of his fighting career, tipping the scales at a lean 245 pounds. However, it just was not enough. Now he intends to change up his strength and conditioning program by enlisting the services of former U.S. strongman representative and UNLV strength coach, Mark Phillippi. He’ll get to put his improved power to the test when he takes on Cheick Kongo at UFC 107 on Dec. 12.

“In the fight with Brock, I really felt there was a huge difference in strength and power. Being 245, I just don’t think I’ll ever be able to compete with him at that weight…. One area of my game I’m really lacking at is physical power. Just training, lifting heavy weights, being explosive, being a powerful athlete…. I’m going to go back to drawing board, I’m going to win two, three fights in a row and get a rematch against him. And I don’t have to sit here and complain about it, I’ll get an opportunity to get locked in a cage with him and show him what I felt about [his post-fight antics].”

    you think he is an idiot because he is training like a strongman. what do you know about strongman training and what do you know about training in general? you probably don't know shit, unless you have studied training shut your mouth and go study something. if you knew anything you would know strongman training gives you the ultimate strength and conditions you especially when you add it to your cardio conditioning. gsp, brandon vera, and many more have sought out strongman type training.

    Honestly, if its anyone that can beat Lesnar, it is Fedor Emelianenko. Dana White is a little bitch, hes afraid Brock Lesnar won't be his little star of his organization anymore, Dana is too scared to admit it, all he does is talk shit about how Lesnar is the best, well hes not the best, FEDOR EMELIANENKO is the best, he will rock Lesnar's shit so bad that Lesnar will wanna go back to the WWE and face guys 80 pounds less than him so he can look like a badass

    Mir should also concentrate on his takedown abilities, both offense and defense. He said he wasn't going to work on that in the last pre-fight interviews and just improve his striking and BJJ. He had Brock in trouble on the feet so he should work on making Brock stay where he's least comfortable: on his feet or in the bottom position on the ground.

    everybody always says that mir almost had him in the second round. same with randy.     I hate the hausse in bulking up and using roids and whatnot. With the testing it'll only allow those with really good cycling programs and elaborate methods to slip by (read; americans), At PRIDE it was at least a fair draw where anyone who wanted to could do as much roids as Wandy (or as little as Fedor). If you wanted it, you went for it and no fuzz... if you didn't want it, fair play to you. I also hate how all these ginormous yanks all have high altitude camps or hides away in training camps and whatever. These whole Brock affair sickens me knowing that Nog probably wont be juicing just because it's "the rules". ****ing stupid is what is. Will only punish those with a conscience.

    Great point. Couture was a lot smaller than Mir. About 25 lbs, which means that he was about 65 lbs smaller than Lesnar. Starting to sound like excuses. Maybe Frank should work on his wrestling instead so he is a little more well rounded. It is funny that he changed his tune from "technique is the key" to "I need more muscles."

    Frank is a dick. First he said that he was mad that Mazzagati stopped the first fight because of illegal blows because he was just about to make his move. Then he said he was just about to get Lesnar with something before Lesnar shoved his fist down franks throat in the rematch. Now he is changing his story. he worries to much about what people think. Lesnar did not beat him just because he is big. Lesnar actually trained in wrestling for a little while. Sure he is a little one sided, but so was gracie and people credit him for changing the sport. Lets remember couture did a lot better than Mir and weighed a lot less.

    Let me just state this small fact for you idiots that look at records and think a fighter is god because he has a bunch of wins and no loses...Carwin sucks he leaves himself open, he is very sloppy and sluggish in the cage. He is a good wrestler and a good puncher... brock is a better wrestler weaker puncher..Brock is way bigger than carwin is too..it might say on paper that they are about equal but they are not...also mir would tap carwin on the ground,, carwin is no lesnar and mir uses his kicks foot work and head movement as well as his jabs to set up big punches. Carwin does not compare to either fighter...Brocks fights have shown he can compete at the highest level carwin almost lost to a mediocre hw in gonzaga...you might want to start looking at things objectively instead of basing things on what you think you know people cause by the looks of it there is only 2 guys on here that even have a clue what is going on inside the octagon...Learn some MMA fight a few fights and getand go to your mma clinic if you think you know a lot..otherwise shut your fat lazy asses the **** up cause nobody wants to hear what a sorry ass fight fan has to say if they don't really know what they are talking about. just keep paying for your tickets and watch fights..stop blogging cause half you sound like ****in retards

    he could of kept that fight standing, he tried for a flying double knee in which brock caught him inmid air. He had brock on the verge of a ref stoppage or even a KO but Mir got sloppy and went for a high risk strike that failed.

    Mir will knock brock out if carwin does not do it..he was shaky on his feet in the 2nd fight with mir it looked like mir rocked him a little thats why he went back to the ground..as far as him gaining strenght you guy are idiots you think this is bad for him...and brock is clean....pretty much always has been except the wwe days...if frank uses this to his advantage and bulks up from power lifting there is no reason why he can't compete with brock

    Strength will only add to his technique. It is obvious that he sees guys the size of brock as the future of UFC HW's so he wants to be able to compete as a Heavyweight. The days of 225 lb. Heavyweights in the UFC is almost over. Even randy knows this and wants to drop to LHW

    I dont like frank mir anymore he is just a talker. I understand he wants to get more power and all that but that goes against his fighting style he used to say that power and size dont matter and teqnique is all that he requires to be the champ and blah blah blah... ( he doesnt stop talking). Its like leaving ur fighting style. Basically he is just saying no to the firm belief of his about fighting, Teqnique.
