    I can't believe how many gsp haters are on this site, I guess they must have been the ones that put big money on alves or penn or both and are very bitter. How can anyone think alves won a round? I've watched the fight many many times and IMO the stand up was even and if anything gsp got the better of it, knocking alves down and almost finishing him. He almost subbed him also in the fourth round, and the entire fight save the fifth round was either trying to knock alves out or sub him. alves striking defense was too good as so was his sub defense, but his wrestling take downs wasn't up too par but his ability to get up was impressive. Not a super exciting fight as both fighter were close in some skills but IMO gsp being superior in all other than some aspects of striking but not quite good enough to finish the fight. Those who say gsp is just a lay and pray fighter are idiots, gsps last three vicitms bled and there faces were messed up after the fight from gsp's striking and ground and pound. What was gsp suposed to do with alves stand in the pocket and bang away all night?? He fought a smart fight, he knew he had superior wrestling,bjj ,reach and speed and did his best, dominated but didn't finish, bottom line is he won and did it convincingly. Gsp's lack of ability to finish fitch and alves isn't a testiment to gsp's lack of skill but to how tough and skilled his opponets were.

    If alves had used the leg kicks like he did to destroy many fighters b4 then the fight might have went different. Not sayn he would have won but it would have stopd alot of takedowns that gsp did from his enormous leg strength and also kept the fight as mostly stand up where alves might have beat gsp because alves might have been able to throw knees around but everytime they got off the ground it went right back to the ground because gsp has such great takedowns and trastions. Alves needs to do a lil work and come back for another shot in take out Rush like he did the legend.

    GSP was great, like always. I would like to him to move up and matche up against silva, even though I know could lose. Nonetheless, he would give Anderson Silva a hell of a fight. On another note. Lesner is all muscle and no technique nor discipline. Mir will be back, and he will **** him up again.

    Oh and for all those talking about greasing, bet in your ecstacy to have something good to say about GSP you failed to noticed he wasn't even getting his face greased between rounds. So not only did he kick ass, he went in clearly determined not to cast any doubt on his skills.

    I love how people hate GSP so much they actually suggest the judges should score the fight different. First off, just watch the first round and tell me where during it Alves was more aggressive. He certainly looks mean, but he wasn't being more aggressive, GSP hit more shot, plus the takedowns. Then one idiot suggested that the judges score how well Alves was able to get up from the takedowns...but why not just score how well he was at NOT getting taken down? Or right, he only stopped 3 takedowns. But wait, shouldn't they score the shots GSP was getting off while he had Alves down? Of course they shouldn't, because then St. Pierre would win the fight, and we don't want that to happen, we want to be proven right that dominating stand up is the only way to be a great fighter.

    Those who don't appreciate the Genius and Phenom-like abilities of GSP are the uneducated minority of MMA watchers. Theres a reason why he has so many fans. even outside of Canada.

    How can you not appreciate when you see fighters like FITCH,HUGHES,SERRA,PENN,ALVES who...DOMINATE OPPONENTS...and also stuff take downs easily!...
    Get man handled by GSP.... thrown around...pounded on? OWNED?,....
    Yes...its not as exciting to watch as a stand up war...but just watching GSP pick apart opponents- OUT-STRIKING strikers,OUT WRESTLING decorated wrestlers, PASSING never before passed guards, GnPing BJJ masters while avoiding getting caught. - is just marvelous and a sight to behold...
    Only once in a lifetime will you see someone so far ahead of the division.

    GSP and Alves had IMO an almost even striking match. GSP landed and so did thiago...but GSP knocked him down. And landed more leg kicks.

    GSP backed off more because (A)he wanted to set-up other attacks(B) because hes not an idiot and knows thiagos strenths are up close (C)
    HES NOT A DUMB FIGHTER...why should he fight fire with fire? when hes got a fire hose? (his wrestling) for those a bit slow among us.

    Ok I let this go on long enough. You want to know why GSP will never fight Silva? Because Silva would destroy GSP and the UFC doesn't want that to happen. Silva is a lot bigger and has better footwork....GSP could not get him down because silva would dance around him. GSP may be the best pound for pound fighter but that does not mean he can dominate in other weight classes. Just be content with him being the WW champion unless you want his legacy tarnished.

    There was no doubt about who won that fight....even Thiago new that....he held GSP's hand above his head in knowing that GSP was the CHAMP! Great sign of respect and humility....great traits for an excellent fighter. Rematch would be nice to watch :) and again another outstanding fight for the greatest!

    I laugh at how these people piss and moan about the "lay and pray" , yet claim anderson silva being the all mighty, ..guess ya never watched that UFC in montreal where he kicked LEITES calves for 5 rounds, standing there, as Leites begged for him to jump into his guard, NOW if you want to talk about someone not wanting to lose their belt, neither did anything about anything , GSP stood and punched, waited, timed his counter and either took him down or knocked alves with a jab. I do applaud Alves , he put up a very decent fight, he's a hell of a fighter and anyone who'd stand toe to toe with him is seriously insane, The fight tonite realy wasnt any differnt than Lyoto Machida's style, *roughly, hit and move , hit and move, .. its WHAT makes champions.

    All in all GSP is a more rounded fighter than Alves. Alves is strong, but doesn't have enough experience yet to beat GSP. Alves will be back like many of you said, and with a ground game instead of all striking. It is like what GSP said about Alves, he will learn from this loss and come back better than he was.

    They say in the commentary exactly why Alves didn't throw leg kicks, and GSP showed it a few times. When he tried it GSP would get a takedown by catching the leg. That's why he didn't.

    If you tried to break into something you had interest in and were immediately booed and disregarded by the "fans" of the sport you'd be bitter like lesnar too. Is he cocky? Yes.     GSP was immense, from what i saw gsp was getting the better of the stand up as well. His takedowns were world class. They were also stopping alves from kicking when standing as he knew he would be taken down if he kicked which i think was a great gameplan. i can see the same thing happening to the welter weights as did the middleweights with the champion becoming unbeatable. Cant wait to see GSP vs SILVA id say GSP is more well rounded but SILVA has more dangerous strikes. If GSP gets up to the weight i think it could be realy interesting.

    Anyways I said it was lay and pray, but read the rest of it. I said it was smart to avoid Thiago's hands, and that it was hard for George to work on the ground because Thiago was so good getting to the feet. If you read my entire post as opposed to the first line you wouldn't say such stupid things. George was smart and Thiago was impressive with his defense, which lead to alot of the fight on the ground but not a lot of action. I never said I loved it, or I loved George or anything, it was smart and I'm glad George kept his belt.

    This was total lay and pray which I usually love however in this case it didnt really bother me for a few reasons. GSP obviously wanted nothing to do with Thiago's standup which is smart. But also Thiago was very impressive on the ground, all Georges could do is take him down and try to keep him there, if he moved to get better position or posture up Thiago got to his feet. I kind of expected this for a round or two but he did it for 5 rounds. Thiago showed great heart and tons of potential, all other WW's beware of him, because I don't see anyone else keeping him down (even Fitch) and he's got dynamite in those hands.

    Just like I thought it would go. I was impressed how Alves was able to get up as many times as he did.
    No matter how good of a striker the fighter you are putting yourself at a huge disadvantage if your opponent KNOWS that you are not going to try to take them down. Alves is leaving half of the mma equation when he enters the octagon. GSP only had to worry about half of the stuff that Alves did.

    GSP is still only showing about 75% of what he is capable of, he is still holding back his true potential,compared to Silva we can't see exactly what he is capable of, GSP is still evolving, that is what makes him unique. Alves showed a decent guard, futile takedown defense, however still a valiant effort, but not enough to take the belt away from the our Canadian warrior. Brock will be a force to reckon with, his juggernaut, yet golem like stature will be difficult for any mere mortal to over power. Hendo no doubt proved and delivered, true to his word backed it up with a devasting tko! Overall a memorable outing for the UFC 100.

    Yeah Alves is still very young, he will of course be back. I saw this fight going exactly the way it did when I first heard about it a couple months ago. They hyped up Alves after his wins over Hughes and Koscheck ect., and I just kept thinking...yeah that's nice and all but he isn't well rounded enough for GSP.I knew his ground game would come into to play as the determining factor, and yeah pretty much was that.He did well at getting back to his feet I must say and stuffed at least 1 take down...but GSP's take down average is off the charts.Anyway, kind of a boring fight for the most part, well compared to Hendo murdering Bisping anyway lol.

    Gsp's experience over dominated Alves strength, and it's what all matters in UFC. No matter how big is the oponent, how strong it will be, what really matters is, speed, tecniques and a lot of strategy.

    Alves impressed in a few ways. GSP usually holds people down and passes guard at will, whereas Alves kept him in guard and popped up to his feet a lot.

    It's also incredible how Alves can even make 170lbs, let alone cut all that weight and still be going hard in the 5th round.

    GSP rules
    GSP is the best pound for pound in the world and his grappling is incredible . He has no shot against Silva at 185 so people need to leave him alone about that . Why can't he just be the best where he is ?

    I think Alves should have set up and thrown more leg kicks. Most of GSP's take downs are because of the strength of his legs. Thiago looked scared to open up after the first few takedowns and that is not a good sign. But i agree with the poster above, thiago will be back

    i think what was expected happened tonight, thiago bit off more than he could chew and was shown tonight that when it comes to fighting world class fighters thiago needs more time to grow. its not all about power and muscles it takes skills. hell be back though
