UFC
Lyoto Machida: "I Won at Least The First Three Rounds"
Posted By james
UFC News

Reigning light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida talks to Sherdog about his controversial unanimous decision win over challenger Mauricio Rua at UFC 104 last Saturday night in L.A
“I thought it was a very even and tough fight. I had the opportunity to see the fight again and I thought I won four rounds and Shogun took the last one. Some people say he won the fourth and fifth round, but for sure I won at least the first three rounds. The American commentators were pretty much biased. If you see the fight without audio, you will probably see a different fight. Shogun was a great opponent and had a nice strategy. He deserves all my respect as a fighter, but I was superior. I had three or four chances to finish the fight, and he never put me in danger. I didn’t get (dazed) at any moment of the fight, but I put him in danger three or four times. He kicked my legs a couple of times, but he wouldn’t knock me out with that. This fight was judged by professionals, so I’m pretty much comfortable with the result.”

All Shogun did was leg kicks.....this will never end a fight. I do agree this wasn't the same lyoto as usual but you have to TAKE the belt from the champ to be the new champ and Shogun did not to this at all.

Machida probubly still cant walk and he might still be shittin on himself from all the body kicks. Shogun controlled the fight, landed a lot more strikes, and tried to fight instead of run like a punk. He might of won 4 out of 5 rounds. What were cecil and his boys smoking that night.

machida won why???
this is why you people!! please watch the fight over and over''and i like Rua""
but the big problem with the way all people saw the fight is that for
the 1st time MACHIDA !! GETS HIT AND HIT a lot """ but lets be fair to,, not
jus''t MACHIDA ''but the way he SCORE pay attention to round 1,,2,,and #3
now!! you will see ,, if you slow the fight in your DVR or TVO''' know that
SHOGUN RUA "" IS HITTING MACHIDA REALLY HARD but 4 1 kick RUA
got'' in he took 1 OR 2 punches from MACHIDA now this are real ''facts''
that as much as we want SHOGUN RUA''' to be the champ we have to
be fair with reality and this is for all you PEOPLE!! if you are gonna open
your mouth!! please watch the fight 1st ..
THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME SOMEONE HIT MACHIDA REALLY BAD BUT
THE FIGHT WAS FAIR WHEN THE FIGHT WAS OVER I SAID SHOGUN WON!! AND I WAS MAD CAUSE MACHIDA WON BUT AFTER WATCHING
THE FIGHT 3 TIMES I SAW THAT IT WAS A SUPER CLOSE FIGTH AND
THAT SHOGUN RUA HIT AND DID MORE DAMAGE with LESS KICKS AND PUNCHES BUT IF YOU LISTEN to MACHIDA"S CORNER they SAY to machida''!!
don't kick ANYMORE use your punches!!! WHY BECAUSE FOR 1 KICK SHOGUN GIVE MACHIDA'''machida GIVE SHOGUN 1 OR 2 PUCHES BUT TO ALL PEOPLE IT LOOK LIKE MACHIDA DID NOT DO MUCH
because it was to fast see on tv and catch the punch and the kick from
RUA OR MACHIDA SPECIALLY' FROM MACHIDA SO!! SHOGUN SCORE AND HIT HARD BUT REMEMBER""""!!
IF YOU HIT ME 1 TIME AND I HIT YOU 2 times!! BUT YOUR ONE HIT MAKES ME ALL BLOODY DOES NOT!! MEAN YOU SCORE MORE AND THAT's WHAT HAPPEN IN this FIGHT.. SORRY GUYS ''I KNOW BUT CHECK FOR YOURSELF THERE WAS NOT FAULT PLAY......
LYOTO MACHIDA WON,,, NOT THE WAY WE WANTED HIM TO WIN BUT HE WON !!FAIR and SQUARE ...
REMEMBER THIS IS REALLY GOOD FOR US THE FANS cause THE NEXT FIGHT IS GONNA BE A SUPER FIGHT because''!!!
LYOTO MACHIDA and SHOGUN RUA WILL GO IN TO ''show ''
WHO's THE REAL BOSS!!!!!

Rogan tries hard to hype up fighters who've had success in organizations outside of the UFC because a lot of tools have no idea who they are or were. When the fighter has a good showing he'll go overboard to tell the audience, "See what I mean? This guys a great fighter for those who don't already know, douchebags..."

It's really disappointing to see that so many so called fans of the sport are just a bunch of meat heads with kneejerk reactions to complex fight scenarios. It's NOT plainly obvious that Rua won. Nothing about this fight is plainly obvious. The fight was painfully close, and Machida should be counting his blessings after receiving the win. But people think that the UFC's judging is fixed based upon that result, saying things like 'it was the worst decision in MMA history'.... Wake up! Rua couldn't take him down, he really tried very hard, he couldn't knock him down, or wear him down sufficiently to end the thing. In my opinion it was an amazing fight. A real martial arts fight with tactics, strategy, foresight, and respect. I hope UFC is headed more in this direction - with guys who are so skilled, so prepared that after 5 rounds they can still be battling for an advantage. The All American Meat Head Squad just wants to see blood soaked canvases and people having Jerry Springer show hysterical rages.

In the end it was Machida who left the Octagon battered and bruised. Rest assured that Lyoto will be icing the bulk of his body for a large chunk of the week , while Shogun will be icing his shins more than anything else.
Both men know who won that bout deep down. Machida will say that he feels like he won the fight, but he knows better, and we know better: Shogun is the people’s light heavyweight champion

I already watched the fight 3 times with no volume and scored as follows:
1 rd: 10-9 machida
2 rd: 10-9 machida
3 rd: 10-9 machida
4 rd: 10-9 rua
5 rd: 10-9 rua
final 48-47
Shogun strategy was NOT enough to win
No takedowns from Rua
Rua's got to BEAT the champ to BE the champion!

No, Machida was not the aggressor, Rua was, but Machida did CONTROL the fight. This is what he does every time he fights. He is never the aggressor but by sticking to his own game plan and leading Rua around the Octagon he was controlling where the fight went, I know this is hard to believe but if you go back and watch Machida's fights, he does this in EVERY single one. Machida may not have landed more hits but he landed more punches to the head, which count more that Rua's leg kicks which didn't even slow Machida until the 5th. Rua did an AWESOME job, better than anyone has done against Machia so far, but unfortunately he still had to prove more than he did to take the belt from Machida

I love how people think it is a logical argument to write that Lyoto looked and sounded like he thought he had lost, therefore he lost. The man was exhausted and knew that he had lost the last round. His final impression of the fight was that he had lost. Do you honestly think that he remembered rounds 1-3? Now he looks uneasy because he is up against popular opinion. If you want to argue that Shogun won that is fine. It was a close fight and thus debatable but use cogent and logical arguments based on what actually happened in the fight.

ok first off rogan was pretty even on comments but goldberg was biased for sure it sounds like rogan was biased because the fight was one sided only in the first round machida was countering with jabs and by round three the leg kicks were unanswered and with out listening to the announcers i still give the fight to shogun cause he was more aggressive even if that is machidas style he was moving backwards and where are these times that rua was hurt cause i didnt see him hurt at any point in the fight lyoto had two flurries wich both ended with rua winning the exchanges to sit back and make excuses for lyoto is rediculous he lost the fight and he knows it we know the judges knew it and the whole crowd knew it so stop the excuses for him there is no one to blame but himself rua had a perfect strategy and it was ruined by bad judges shoguns gameplan was the perfect counter for a dangerous opponent shogun did the same thing jardine did to chuck and was clearly robbed machida faded after just the second round and does not deserve to be called the champion so unless there is an imediate rematch i will not support any more machida fights and none of you guys should either

Shogun won and Machida lost respect on this one. I agree he is in no position to talk about who won or lost. As a matter of fact it seems as if HE IS JUSTIFYING HIS WIN!(which he knows it's a loss) Please that guy was not the agressor and not the one with more hits. I believe he should have proved much more than what he did to keep his belt. That belt & title belongs to Shogun Rua. I hope Shogun finishes him next fight.

Almost every time Shogun landed a kick Rogan would yell: "WOW, GREAT LEG KICK/BODY KICK BY SHOGUN!!" There were many times when these kicks were countered by a punch to the face and nothing was said about that. So if you are listening to Rogan, it's easily to be swayed in the direction of Shogun. I also went back and counted the number of punches landed to the head and Shogun had around 5. Lyoto landed over 10, plus he rocked Shogun in the 3rd, and unleashed a deadly flurry on him at the end of the same round in which he hit Shogun a bunch of times consecutively. However, all Rogan was talking about after the flurry was how Shogun landed a punch to Lyoto's head. Lyoto's illusive style also makes it looks as though he is running away, thus giving Shogun the image of the aggressor when in reality they are fighting Lyoto's type of fight. This combined with Shogun's domination of the 5th round really can make it look as though Shogun won definitely. He did not. It was a very close fight. I could have seen it going either way, but after reading Cecil Peoples explanation of the scoring I am convinced Lyoto won.

...but the 15,000 strong crowd in attendance booed and jeered the decision, correct me If I'm wrong, but they sure as shit aint plugged into Rogan's commentary.
Machida is making feeble exscuses, he shouldnt say anything past "I gladly accepty a rematch"...and hopefully Rua finishes him this time round.

Honestly? I think this took so long to be submitted because Machida knows deep down that he lost...
...he wore the demeanor of a loser post-fight, and I dnt mean because his lip was split, or the bruised side of his torso and his damaged legs, I mean his general posture and expression, even the delayed raising of his hands when the bell was rang was done to counter Rua raising his own hands...
...if this guy was a true martial artist and his garb for his entrances and his mysticism would have you believe, the kid should really NOT be talking about who won rounds, because over 25 mins, I think Machida was comprehensively outfought, Cecil Peoples is a joke and his defense is flawed, I've watched the fight numerous times, slowed down in particular spots to properly analyse this shit...that whole "round 3 flurry where Shogun was hurt" is nothing....Machida swarmed, connected maybe 2 jabs at most, PUSHED Rua back like he did Evans, tried again then ate a huge right hook and was forced into grappling...
...I ask you, when have you seen Machida forced into grappling? The guy has a better chin I thought he would for someone who takes barely any damage per fight (except this one)...
...but I'm really dissapointed by Machida, and disheartened by the decision. This wasnt Rua of Pride days, or the gassed version Forrest beat and Coleman gave trouble, this was a new Shogun who countered effectively and applied constant pressure with a technical and tactical astuteness no one though possible of the "sloppy" fighter.
This is the worst decision in MMA, and people are still debating it like there is a case to be made for Machida, sure, if you're blind.

Like I said before, I am a huge Lyoto fan and this fight pissed me off. I was convinced that Shogun had been robbed. THEN I watched it the way a judge would instead of a fan. I counted strikes landed (nothing else counted much this time). Machida landed more strikes. Sherdog get's this one wrong. Neither fighter ever had the other in trouble but another round would have seen Machida unable to utilize effective footwork. Machida had the more meaningful exchanges while Rua had the more meaningful single strikes with his leg kicks. Those who say leg kicks don't win fights don't have a clue. They almost won it for Rua. I had the fight scored
1; 10-9 Machida
2; 10-9 Machida
3; 10-9 Machida
4; Should be a draw but the current system dictates there must be a winner so 10-9 Rua
5; 10-9 Rua
In retrospect I think I had Machida losing when I first watched because I was shocked to see him getting hit so much. It was a very close fight but the judges definitely scored it correctly. I would however like to see an immediate rematch.
