Matt Hughes Wants Winner Of GSP vs. Alves

UFC News

"At this moment in time I'm a free agent. I went and sat down with Dana after the fight and discussed a few things, and I can tell you this, I've got one more big fight left in me and its going to have to be against the winner of the GSP/Alves fight this July. Nothing else makes sense right now. I can't really get myself motivated for anything else at this point in my career. I feel my chances against either guy are as good as anyones right now."
-Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes on his future in the UFC. Hughes defeated Matt Serra via decision this past Saturday at UFC 98 to run his record to 43-7. The former 9-time UFC champion lost to both Georges St. Pierre and Thiago Alves in back-to-back lopsided affairs.

People like the two above me have made a complete joke of this forum.. Look, we all know hughes cant beat gsp or alves... The point is, does he have a right for a title fight after ufc 100? I honestly dont think he does.. As mentioned earlier, you cant get a title fight contention based on past accomplishments.... He should earn it just like everyone else... Matt Hughes: I love ya man, but its time to hang up the gloves. GSP is the welterweight king and absolutely noone including alves is going to take his crown for a very long time.

I can't really support Hughes on this one. You can't expect the number one contender spot to be handed to you because of past accomplishments. I don't see the UFC handing out a title shot to Chuck Liddell because his retirement is in sight. Now I could see the #1 spot being given to him if he was able to beat someone like Jon Fitch or perhaps the loser of GSP and Alves. The only issue with Hughes fighting the loser is that both would be rematches with guys that not only beat him but destroyed him. I know Hughes just wants to get the title back and retire with it, but come on, who doesn't want to go out like that? If Hughes wants the title back, he has to be ready to win two more in a row. One for the #1 contention and one for the belt. He had the throne for longer then any welterweight in history, his torch was passed and I don't see him getting it back.

Matt has no boxing game to go with his grappling, there isnt too many more people he would be able to compete with. Hang em up or get hung up

Hopefully the guy above me is right 'cause Matt needs to hang up the gloves. He's not gonna beat anyone in the top 5 of the WW division. Why the hell does he think he has a chance against St. Pierre or Alves? Both fighters made a fool out of him. He barely won that fight against Serra too. His stand-up was horrible, his takedowns looked awkward and he mostly LNP'ed Serra. His GNP isn't even effective anymore. He couldn't do anything to Alves on the ground either. I don't get why Dana insisted upon retiring Chuck but still will let Hughes fight. And, yes, he did say he had "one" fight in him left while training to fight Serra.

This is all made up. Hughes said that he hasn't even talked with Dana. You can look that up on his website if you want to.

I don't get why pros get so much pressure to retire when they are no longer #1. Hughes will probably never wear the belt again, but he's still top 10, probably top 5 in his weight class. If he wants to continue to fight, let him.
I don't agree that he should get a title shot though. His last fight or not, you should have to earn your title shot which he hasn't. He needs to at least beat 1 title contender first.... give him the loser or gsp/alves, or Fitch or something. Serra is an aging light-weight who's prolly not even in top10 at 155... not impressed in inching out a decision win vs him.

Matt Hughes
Matt Hughes is pretty much done but I think he can take Thiago Alves though. Alves was a lot bigger than Hughes was in their fight and if they are the same size, Hughes can over power and outwrestle him.
No fighter is unbeatable. Anything could happen. Hughes deserves to fight one of those guys before he retires.

title shots in the ufc are puzzling?
beyond the fact either gsp or alves would probably destroy matt now, i dont think he deserves a shot at the title just becouse thats the only fight he can motivate himself for? there are more deserving fighters that have been putting the work in lately, marcus davies, dan hardy, even mike swick maybe? not matt hughes again though? come on..

Trigg?!?
Hughes already beat him twice - no reason for him to fight him again. I could see Alves being good, he was doing fairly well in that fight till Alves caught him with that knee. GSP could be another story, he needs to out wrestle him and not stand and trade like he tried last time...

Frank Trigg
Frank "Twinkle Toes" Trigg has just resigned with the UFC and would make for a good opponent for Matt "Country Boy" Hughes.

U GOTTA BE JOKING
WAKEUP MATT HUGES!!!!...gsp will destroy u again. Is this guy on shrooms or what.Huges didnt even fight well against Serra.Learn how to box Hughes cause gsp has gone beyond your skills and who knows how much better gsp is now since the last time they fought. As for Alves vs Huges, i can see a rematch in the near future but Hughes needs to pick up on some more muy-thai and boxing to really make an impact on his comeback.I respect his ju-jitsu & great wrestling
