Former light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson isn’t very happy with the three judges who awarded Lyoto Machida a unanimous decision win over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua this weekend at UFC 104.

“The UFC looked like assholes this weekend.The main event was boring. I anticipated that because let’s be real … Machida is a boring fighter. But Shogun getting robbed like that was pretty cutthroat…. Most of the people from the ‘A-Team movie’ were just watching it because I was watching it and they don’t know much about MMA and were starting to get into it, but [Saturday] night they didn’t have anything good to say about my sport. So I was so ashamed…. The UFC needs to get some new judges before I even think about coming back. I want the hardcore fans to go back and watch all the fights that you thought was kinda shady with the judges in the UFC and TUF and write down the names of the judges so you guys can complain and have a voice. Do your homework. This sport wouldn’t be what it is without the fans. It’s hard for me to believe that the UFC is so successful and has over 100 shows and can’t tell who wins a fight.”

    Rua got robbed. Machida got smacked by Rua for four rounds. Had no wind and no wheels thanks to Rua. I stopped watching boxing because of this crap, and I ain't paying for no more PPV until I see some credible scoring. I don't care, I'll wait for someone to post it on the 'net. I've always loved UFC because it was pure. But when I see bogus scoring and immediate hyping of "the next fight," I think we're getting robbed just like we got robbed with boxing.

    UFC should pray to have Rampage back, and quick. He's one of the few guys that's entertaining in and out of the ring. He may not make much of a coach, but I'm in stitches every time he's on. There are a lot of good guys in the UFC, don't get me wrong. But 'Page is just head and shoulders above everyone else when it comes to entertaining.

    for all the people talking about commentary bias...what the hell, they announced the fight like it was.

    the whole fight can be summarized as follows: lyoto lands some knees in round 1, and good knee when shogun clinches him and the rest of the fight is lyoto taking body kick after body kick after low kick after lick. throw in the the occasional punch and elbow cutting up lyoto's face.

    this guy can't coach, he has no knowledge outside his own arsenal, he knows no technical point of view when comes to fighting. I actually think the judges did a fair professional job...people are posers and people are uneducated, we should worry about that in the sport.
    people like me who see these things would agree, machida rounds 1, 2, 3 rua 4, 5...and we should be grateful that a great fighter has come back and that he is certainly at the level of machida...welcome mauricio rua! you make us muay thai students pround...can't wait for the rematch and can't wait for these uneducated people to stop crying.

    Also: Rampage Jackson is an angry, emotionally stunted individual, and his comments are obviously motivated completely by his recent dispute with Dana White. Rampage seems to be getting more arrogant, ridiculous, and unlikeable by the day. It's a shame really.

    A lot of you have a pretty exaggerated sense of Shogun's enititlement to the decision. I think it's very arguable that he won the fight, 3/5 rounds, but, if you go back and watch the fight, minus the Joe Rogan bias commentary, you'll see that it was pretty close and it's not like Shogun walked all over him. He never had Machida rocked or stunned at any point in that fight; Rua fought very conservatively, and was even quite possibly strategizing for a decision win rather than a finish. He wasn't able or willing to turn up the volume at a decisive moment and thus he didn't win the controversial decision - and that's what happens when you don't have real control over the fight. You can bitch all you want about the decision and I dont even necessarily disagree.... but it was close. Too close for either fighter's comfort.

    rua is just stupid if he had been able to press the action hard enough, maybe score a takedown and some ground and pound in the fifth round making it a 10-8 or 10-7 he would have definately won the fight. otherwise machida clearly deserved to keep his belt as he wasn't clearly beaten and in fact dominated much of the first three and a half rounds.

    I’ve watched the replay of the Lyoto Machida-Mauricio “Shogun” Rua fight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight title four times since seeing it live Saturday at UFC 104 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

    I saw it twice on the computer and twice on the 60-inch plasma. I saw it twice with the sound on, listening to the commentary of announcers Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan, and I’ve seen it twice with the sound off.

    And each time I’ve seen it, I’ve come to the same conclusion: This was an excruciatingly close fight that either man could have won.

    Judges Nelson Hamilton, Cecil Peoples and Marcos Rosales gave Machida a unanimous decision, each scoring it 48-47. The difference in the fight is how Rounds 1 and 4 were scored.

    Rosales and Peoples gave Machida the first round, while Hamilton gave it to Rua. And they gave the fourth round to Rua, while Hamilton gave that one to Machida. All three agreed that Machida won Rounds 2 and 3 and Rua took Round 5.

    I gave Rua Rounds 1, 4 and 5 and Machida Rounds 2 and 3. And while nothing I’ve seen in watching the replay over and over has convinced me to change my verdict, I’m also perplexed by the outrage over the verdict.

    There have been a lot of decisions a lot worse than this one that haven’t gotten a 10th of the reaction.

    UFC president Dana White, who said he gave Rounds 2 and 3 to Machida and 4 and 5 to Rua, felt Rua won despite saying the first round was too close to call. He wants to make a rematch as quickly as possible, but it’s unlikely they’ll be able to meet until late winter/early spring.

    Machida was given a medical suspension after the fight from the California State Athletic Commission, banning him from having contact in training for 60 days. That means he won’t be able to begin training in earnest until Christmas Eve.

    He could fight earlier if he is cleared by a doctor, but if not, it makes March look like the most likely month.

    If a doctor doesn’t waive the 60-day no-contact suspension and Machida took an eight-week training camp starting on Dec. 24, he wouldn’t be prepared to fight until late February. The UFC could make Machida-Rua II the main event of the planned show on Feb. 21 in Sydney, Australia, but a more likely scenario is the fight will be pushed back until March or later unless he requests and receives permission from a commission doctor to fight sooner.

    I’ll get to a mailbag filled with questions and comments on the Machida-Rua bout as well as Brock Lesnar’s decision to postpone his heavyweight title fight with Shane Carwin until sometime early next year because of the flu. But before I do, I ask that you follow me on Twitter And with that, let’s get to the mailbag:


    MACHIDA-RUA THOUGHTS
    Amazing fight with Machida and Shogun. I loved the technical battle between the fighters. The five-round battle was amazing. I know there is controversy regarding the outcome, but after watching the fight three times, I would give Rounds 1, 2 and 3 to Machida and Rounds 4 and 5 to Shogun. The first three rounds were very close, so it could have gone either way. I’m tired of the outrage from the media saying Shogun destroyed Machida etc. I’m a true fan of both of these fighters and couldn’t have asked for a better fight.

    Anyone who thinks Shogun “destroyed” Machida is kidding themselves. I accept anyone who thinks Shogun won, as I did, and I have no argument with anyone who believes Machida deserved the decision. In close fights, there is plenty to debate. And this was as close a fight as one can get.

    In your column about the fight, you say that “Fans, who are distracted by other things, tend to look away from the action for a split second or two several times in a fight, whether it be to talk to a friend, grab a snack or gesticulate after a big blow.” I think you are thinking of sports fans (baseball, for example) and not MMA fans in the seats. I think fans react differently in an MMA fight versus other sporting events. I agree that at maybe a baseball game if there were a big play (like a home run) people would celebrate/gesture without missing much action since there is naturally a pause in the game. However, at least for me, when a big blow lands at a MMA event, people jump to their feet and pay more attention to the fight. In MMA big blows don’t end things and are often followed up with fight-ending action, so people tend to focus more to see where things go. Also, you are assuming that everyone in the stands are doing these things at the exact same times and doing them so often within a 25-minute fight that they are missing a lot of things.

    Mark, I’ve covered fights, both boxing and MMA, for well over 20 years. And I can tell you that it’s been my experience that fans (and the media, frequently) don’t pay attention and don’t maintain the same concentration that judges do. And in a fight like Machida-Rua, in which the margin is so narrow, looking away even once in a round could be enough to change the way one sees it.

    Your point about Rua not pressing the action in the last two rounds being the fault of his corner is moot because he won the fourth round on two of the three judges’ cards and took the fifth on all three. So, he won those rounds anyway. Each round is its own entity and is scored based on the action those rounds and in the last two rounds Rua won. If the fight was scored on the overall fight (like in PRIDE) Shogun would have won the fight. So you can make up some line about it being the corner’s fault for misleading Shogun, but the truth is the judges were wrong.

    David, I think Rua could have stopped Machida in the fifth round had he pressed the action. He won the round, but he conceded he didn’t push because he thought he was ahead. Had he done so, he may have gotten the stoppage. As for scoring the overall fight, here is the problem: That type of system almost always favors the fighter who is performing better at the end. And that’s not fair. In the NFL, the games a team wins in September count as much toward its playoff position as do the wins it posts in December. But if we score the overall fight, the fighter at the end is going to get too much of a benefit.

    On behalf of every combat sports official in the world, I offer you a heartfelt thank you for your recent article, “Shogun has no one to blame but himself.” In my officials clinics, I always express that, “There are only three people in the room who 100 percent of the time are committing 100 percent of their energy and focus to evaluating the relative effectiveness of each fighter according to the established criteria … (and) everyone else has other agendas.” In this case we’re talking about three of the most experienced officials in the sport, who delivered a unanimous decision. If there is room for criticism, we should target an ineffective scoring system that forces judges to reward fighters equally for unequal performances.

    I believe one thing that should be changed with the 10-point must system is that judges should be encouraged, not discouraged, to score more 10-10 rounds and to also score more 10-8 and 10-7 rounds. That is a way of differentiating between a round in which the margin between them is very slim and rounds in which one man clearly is superior.

    I just wanted to say I liked your article about the Machida-Rua match. I don’t usually agree with a lot of the articles you write, but I believe you were spot on in this one. Rua should be furious with his corner right now. He was not pressing the action enough due to the fact that his corner kept telling him he was winning the fight. What they should have been telling him is “You can win this fight if you keep pressing the action!” I believe it is possible to retain one’s title by “playing it safe,” but it is not always possible for a challenger to take a title by “playing it safe.”

    The benefit the champion gets in a fight is that he/she retains the title with a draw. That’s it. But had Shogun pushed in the fifth round, I believe he would have stopped Lyoto and won the championship.

    I have lost a lot of respect for Rampage throughout this Ultimate Fighter. He is a bad coach although he says he "Isn't a coach" it doesn't matter. He is disrespectful and starting to look like more of a jerk than Evans. I didn't even like Evans before this season.

    I dont like Rampage, but I agree almost 100% w what he said about the UFC. As for Machida and the main event being boring, I am more entertained by a calculated technical fight than a sloppy slugfest w dry humping. That was actually one of my fave fights ive seen.

    i like the way rampage is saying lyoto is a boring fighter knowing full well that he doesnt have to fight him now. machida would beat rampage, shogun would beat rampage and last but not least rashad would beat rampage. man up and fight rashad and stick to your word rampage you tit! i used to be a huge rampage fan but after watching this season of tuf i am dissappointed, not only that he's left and isnt fighting rashad but about the way he is with his fighters on the show. it was terrible leaving his fighter in the cage on his own just after he'd lost!

    MMA fans are really odd. A few days ago, they gave Rua little to no chance in his fight against Machida. And they the dragon for being an invincible super-human champ. Today, because Shogun performed better in the fight, they all turned against Machida, maligning him and accusing him of being "boring" and lacking in talent...Isn't that strange??? Is it really fair to judge a fighter by a single performance??? I agree that Rua probably won the fight, but the result is the refrees's faut (not Machida's) ...
    Instead of being too emotional, MMA fans should rationalize matters and not rush into hasty judgments and unwarranted accusations...If FEDOR loses to Brett, I'm sure everyone will idolize Da Grim and forget about all the great achievements accumulated over the years by the Russian Emperor...

    rampage is absolutely right if the ufc doesnt fix the judge problems they are gonna stand to lose a lot of money and by the way points are awarded for affective striking grappling aggression and octagon control and shogun was a better striker was more aggressive and controlled the octagon for fifteen minutes rua could have won that fight 50 to 45 the only round that was a toss up was the first so shogun should be champ the ufc should go back and fix this decisions have been over turned before just check matt serras record

    personlly i though shogun won that fight. he landed more strikes, was more agressive, and didnt let machida stop to plan an attack. machida didnt get hurt too bad though so i can see why the judges gave it to him. but still i think shogun landed the most strikes of anyone against machida. he will be back.

    I dont care what anyone says (especially Rampage quitter Jackson), watching Machida fight is NOT boring, it's a completely different form of fighting not seen by any other fighter in MMA. Unless you're a beer drinking lets see someone get KTFO kind of fan, you'll appreciate the Machida karate style and what game plan his opponent has come up with to better it.     The only thing that Rampage does is talk a lot of bullshit!!! He talks a lot about this fight, but he doesn´t mention his fight against Shogun... at that time he got his ass wooped, and pretty bad!!! He lost against Griffin in his last fight with a boring fight, and lets say... Griffin´s last fight was shameless and did one of his worst performances!!! Rampage has nothing to give at this time!!! He cowardly runned away of his fight against Rashad evans. And I bet evans woud kick his ass!!!

    I think the decision was good. Shogun didn't take the belt from Machida. You have to beat the champ to take the belt, and Shogun didn't beat Machida. They more or less fought to a stalemate.

    the UFC needs to get new Judges, and new referees. UFC 104 had two disappointing endings, and sadly, one was at the co main event, and the other, at the main event it self. That's just unacceptable.

    To the poster above who mentioned that the past UFC's have not been any good and the no name fighters put on a better show is because the elite fighters are getting more technical. Eventually MMA will be like boxing where the top lvl fighters are so technical in all areas of the game they will not leave themselves open for subs and knockouts. Back in the day when people were one dimension the sport was more exciting for casual fans.

    Rampage can't tell it was a close fight either but it was. You can give the fight to Rua due to agression but Machida's strikes are effective even tho they don't seem super agressive. Don't forget its hard to be a ref or a judge, people are hard sometimes...On a side note, Ramp knows he would loose to Machida, he disapointed he'll have to fight him to get the belt.

    I agree. The past UFC's I have ordered were not good. The no names were better fights. I have been watching the UFC when i was 9. i am 26 now and agree with Rampage we need better judges and need to change the way they score.
